Let me explain.

When your relationship is good… when you’re happy, comfortable, excited about the future… your body knows it. It’s flooded with desire.

You’re excited about the prospect of intimacy with your partner. You’re looking forward to sexual activity.

Your body knows that it will get all the physical, mental, and emotional benefits from sex.

But when your relationship isn’t going as well as your brain wants to think it is…

Your body already knows.

The desire just isn’t there as much. You’re more shut down, more likely to be turned off. You’re uninterested in having sex… because your needs just aren’t being met.

And here’s the thing: you’re missing a critical opportunity to repair your relationship. You’re missing a crucial chance to relish in your partner, revel in your relationship, and rest in your safe space.

Consider this:

You’re taking a hike and in front of you is a large canyon. On the other side - your car.

There’s a bridge in front of you. It’s old and it’s rickety - it’s missing a few boards, swaying in the wind. The rope that’s holding it up looks like it was hand-woven and… not very well.

Your conscious brain is telling you that the only way to get to your car is to cross this bridge. If you don’t cross this bridge, you’re going to be stuck on this side of the canyon.

But what’s your body telling you?

It is NOT on board with getting on that bridge, is it?

But you take that same bridge, add in some steel cables, some brick footpaths, maybe a few concrete pillars…

And all of a sudden, your body is on board… even though your conscious brain is still saying to cross the bridge.

This is a pretty extreme example (because really, who would walk across that bridge?!) but I’m using it to illustrate a point: that your body picks up on things that you’re simply not aware of.

Now, your body’s reactions are controlled by your subconscious brain - the part that you don’t realize is doing a lot of the grunt work in the background.

But your conscious brain - the part that works to use logic and reason… it’s not picking up on the same signals that your unconscious brain might be.

Which means your conscious brain might be thinking that everything is hunky dory in your relationship - you get along, you enjoy each other’s company, and your sex life is decent enough…

But your subconscious has picked up on all the signs that you’re missing.

Some people call this a gut feeling.

Your subconscious or gut feeling is saying that there’s something missing. There are needs not being met. And that’s a turn off, so it’s time to hit the brakes on sex.

So what do you do?

Just keep going along like your subconscious doesn’t know what it’s talking about?

Or is there, perhaps, a better way?

Your Body Will Help You Avoid The Downward Spiral

Many relationship failures don’t have an exact moment that can be pinpointed as when things started to go downhill.

Think about it. If you had a relationship end… did you just wake up one day and say “nope, I’m all done”?

No. You gradually became disillusioned.

You slowly drifted apart.

Things happened you weren’t even aware of… and if you were - you could have stopped it in its tracks.

The downward spiral is NOT inevitable in an otherwise healthy relationship. It’s NOT unavoidable.

But to stop it in its tracks… you have to be able to spot it in the first place.

Because we’re so used to tuning out our subconscious mind - we’re used to ignoring it when it’s throwing up flags all over the place…

We have to practice being in tune with our bodies to make sure we’re not merrily rolling through life while it spirals out of control.

Practice knowing when your body is telling you that it’s uncomfortable… even if you can’t pinpoint why.

Why you’re not enjoying sex the way you used to. Why you’re not wanting it as frequently or as intensely.

Why you’re not connecting with your partner like you want. Why you’re not completely, fully satisfied to the point where you’re flopped on the bed (or couch, or floor…) in bliss, brain empty of all thoughts but “WOW! Let’s do that again!!”

Why your physical connection to your partner seems to be… missing something.

They ARE signs that your body is giving you that something isn’t right… and it could be your relationship.

How much physical space are you putting between you and your partner? If you notice yourself leaning away, facing opposite directions, or not automatically reaching for their hand where it was normal before… this is your body telling you that your relationship needs attention.

Whatever your body is telling you - the key to increasing the emotional closeness you feel to your partner ALSO involves increasing the physical closeness.

And yes, I mean sex.

What Good Sex Reveals About Healthy Relationships

So why are we having better sex when our relationship is at its healthiest?

And what’s more… how does having better sex make our relationship better?

One word. Communication.

Communication is, frankly, at the root of many unhealthy relationship dynamics… but it’s also at the root of the healthy ones, too.

And when you feel comfortable, safe, and cared for enough to communicate your sexual needs to your partner… that’s the biggest sign of a healthy relationship you can look for.

And your body knows this. This is the part that your body reacts to. If you’re comfortable, it says that you’re good to go for desire. But if something is missing… it holds back that desire.

And sex is at its best when you desire it, you’re satisfied by it, and you want to do it again.

But here’s the key (and it’s found in a study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships) - “sexual satisfaction hinges in part on effective communication, and communication problems are associated with sexual dysfunction and/or dissatisfaction.”

This goes both ways!

When you’re sexually satisfied, you’re more communicative with your partner. And when you’re more communicative with your partner, you’re more likely to be sexually satisfied.

Another study shows that BOTH romantic love and sexual desire impact not only how often you have sex, but how satisfying it is.

But the first goes even further to find that overall relationship satisfaction is enhanced by communication - about both sexual and non-sexual topics.

Which means not only does talking about your needs regarding sex help you have better sex… it helps you have a better relationship.

Yet another study concluded that their findings highlighted a need for increasing sexual satisfaction in order to increase marital satisfaction.

So let’s recap:

  • If you want to be happier and more satisfied in your relationship, it’s important to have better sex.
  • If you want to have better sex, it’s important to communicate your sexual needs to your partner.
  • If you want to communicate your sexual needs, you need to feel safe, comfortable and happy in your relationship.

This is the stuff your body already knows… I’ve just given you the science and logic so your conscious brain can get on board with it.
